Denise Horwood

Firstly, welcome to family life counselling and support services.

If you are looking for support, you have come to the right place.

about me

I am a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor.

I am competent in broad range of counselling therapies. I have expertise in providing situation-specific counseling sessions and experience in working with children and adults with trauma backgrounds, and families in the foster care system. I am knowledgeable in child, youth, and adolescent development, including social, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive strategies.

My practice was born from the deep conviction that we can all lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, regardless of – and in spite of – our circumstances, background, abilities, diagnoses or age.

My greatest joy is to empower and assist men, women and children and couples on their individual and uniquely crafted journey towards new possibilities, meaning and well-being.

My approach to counselling is to create a safe environment that is free from judgement, a listening ear, and a place to bounce around ideas and ultimately bring solution.

I believe it is vital to take the time to find a therapist that you trust, feel comfortable with and who has the required skills to help you achieve your goals.

During a 10-minute complimentary phone consultation I provide you the opportunity to ask questions, gain a sense of me as a person and discuss what to expect during our journey together.

It also allows me to get an idea of your requirements, expectations and goals.

I am currently taking new clients and I am available for online or face to face consultations. If you would like to schedule an appointment, please call or email me.

I am unable to see new clients for emergency care – if your need is urgent please do talk to your GP about more immediate options or call Lifeline (13 11 14) or Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636). These free phone services are available to you 24/7.

If your life is in danger ring 000 – the risk of suicide is every bit as important as a cardiac arrest.

counselling and psychotherapy

What is counselling?
Counselling is a confidential relationship which is built up between 2 or more people, one of which is the counsellor. It is a relationship that recognises that the client brings to the counselling sessions; knowledge, understanding, experience, and expertise.

Within the sessions I will endeavour to create a safe space to listen and see the issue clearly, to understand what it is like for the client, to clarify where the client would like to be, and to explore possible solutions together.

I am able to support parents and carers/guardians in their parenting by helping the parents/carers understand the motivation behind a child’s behaviour.

At Family Life Counselling, I offer a gentle person-centered, and age appropriate session.

Why come to Counselling?
Adults generally come to counselling when something isn’t feeling right, and is affecting their general health and well-being. Children are often brought to counselling by a care giver who is concerned about their well being or they feel they need assistance in some way.

Depression, Anxiety, Distress, Loss, Confusion, Anger, Fear, Rejection, Hurt and Trauma can all get in the way of living.

It is OK to ask for help, and often it is very helpful to speak to someone new – counselling and psychotherapy is indeed effective and available.

Follow ups
Appointments might initially be weekly or fortnightly then become less frequent as you make progress. The duration of appointments will depend on your presenting problem. Some people continue their counselling over years, while others may leave and return if they have a setback.
